Happy September
September is here—and for travelers, the old rules are changing.
Fall has long been the season for fewer crowds and better prices. But as more travelers discover the appeal of September, those bargains are becoming harder to find.
The good news: the best of fall may simply be arriving later.

A Flight Cancellation Doesn’t Have to Ruin Your Trip

We’re taught to have a backup plan for travel. But when your flight gets canceled, most of us immediately start doing the same thing: staring at the airline app and hoping another seat magically appears.
That might not be your best move.
One traveler heading to Cleveland had her early-morning American Airlines flight canceled because of weather. The airline couldn’t get her onto a workable replacement, so she started thinking differently.
She checked other airports. Considered connecting flights. Looked at other airlines. Then she stopped trying to make the flight work and rented a car instead.
It turned into a 15-hour travel day—but she made it to Cleveland. And afterward, she discovered something important: the later flights she had been considering were canceled too.
What to remember when things go sideways
Don’t wait for the airline to solve everything. Start looking at your own alternatives.
Search nearby airports. A little extra driving can open up completely different options.
Ask about other airlines. Your carrier may be able to move you, even if it isn't guaranteed.
Keep your return reservation if you’re only abandoning the outbound.
Think about flexibility when booking rental cars. Saving a few dollars upfront may not be worth being locked in.
The lesson isn't “always rent a car when your flight is canceled.”
It’s don’t become so focused on saving your original itinerary that you miss the better escape route.
Flights. Trains. Rental cars. Nearby airports.
When travel breaks, stop asking “How do I fix my original plan?” Start asking “What’s the smartest way to still get there?”
🍂 September Isn’t the Travel Bargain It Used to Be

Shoulder season used to mean one thing: wait until September, avoid the summer crowds, and watch prices drop.
That formula is getting less reliable.
Hopper data shows fall domestic airfare was about 20% cheaper than summer in 2023. In 2026, fall fares are slightly more expensive than summer. International savings are still available, but they’ve narrowed significantly.
The reason? More travelers now have flexible schedules, extreme summer heat is pushing people into fall, and popular destinations are staying busy longer.
The smarter move: don’t assume September is cheap just because summer is over.
Real shoulder-season value may now arrive later—particularly in late October and November.

A New Way to Experience National Geographic

National Geographic’s newest museum wants you to do more than look at the world—it wants you to step inside it.
The National Geographic Museum of Exploration has opened in Washington, D.C., with more than 100,000 square feet of exhibitions, archives, immersive experiences and live programming.
You can see Jane Goodall’s handwritten field notes, explore more than a century of National Geographic photography, walk through interactive ecosystems and experience a nighttime ocean projection show.
Even better, the museum is designed to change: major exhibitions rotate annually, with smaller exhibitions changing roughly twice a year.
The best part? You may actually have a reason to visit twice.

30 Seconds Hanging From a Bar Could Be Worth It

You don’t always need another complicated workout. Sometimes, 30 seconds is enough to add something useful to your day.
Hanging from a bar can stretch the shoulders and upper body while building grip endurance—particularly helpful if you spend hours at a desk or on your phone.
Start small: try supported 10-second hangs with your feet partly on the floor, then gradually work toward 30 seconds.
The research on casual hanging is still limited, and it isn’t a cure for poor posture or back pain.
But the bigger idea is worth remembering:
Your body doesn’t always need more exercise. Sometimes it just needs more movement.
