What to Do When Someone Keeps Pulling Your Airplane Seat

    Sep 17

Someone grabbing your headrest while getting out of their seat can be startling. Flight attendants say the best response is to assume it wasn’t intentional — at least at first.

Passengers often grab the seat in front of them for balance when squeezing out of a cramped airplane row. But the sudden movement can wake someone, spill a drink or potentially aggravate an existing neck or back problem.

    What you can do

    • Assume it’s accidental. Tight airplane cabins make bumps and awkward movements almost unavoidable.

    • Say something if it keeps happening. A simple, polite comment can solve the problem without turning it into a confrontation.

    • Keep your own belongings secure. If you’re getting out of a window or middle seat, make sure bags and other items aren’t blocking your path.

    • Ask your seatmates for room. Creating a little extra space can make it easier to exit without grabbing the seat in front of you.

    • Raise the armrests. Flight attendants say lifting the armrests and scooching out of the row can reduce the chance of tripping and grabbing the headrest.

If the behavior continues despite a polite request, you can discreetly speak with a flight attendant.

The smarter take: Airplanes are cramped enough without turning small annoyances into conflicts. Give people the benefit of the doubt, speak up politely when necessary, and make your own exit as easy as possible.
